Import Export Code (IEC) Registration Services
Importer Exporter Code (IEC) is a unique ten-digit number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce, Government of India. This mandatory code enables businesses in India to legally carry out import and export activities. Obtaining an IEC is essential for companies, proprietors, and partnerships aiming to expand their business globally.
Why IEC is Mandatory
No person or entity is allowed to import or export goods from India without a valid IEC number. The IEC serves as a primary requirement for customs clearance and facilitates international trade efficiently.
Who Issues IEC?
The DGFT (Directorate General of Foreign Trade) issues IEC to eligible Indian importers and exporters. IEC can be applied through Zonal and Regional DGFT offices depending on the location of the business entity.
Who Needs an IEC?
- All importers and exporters (except those exempted under specific provisions) must obtain IEC.
- Companies, partnerships, proprietors, and even individuals engaging in international trade must have this code.
Validity of IEC
Once issued, an IEC remains valid for the lifetime of the business entity unless canceled by the DGFT. The same IEC can be used for all branches, units, or divisions of the company mentioned in the IEC license.
Duplicate IEC
If the IEC is lost or misplaced, businesses can request a duplicate copy from the issuing authority with a supporting affidavit.
Surrender of IEC
Businesses that no longer wish to operate their IEC may surrender it by notifying the issuing authority. Upon confirmation, the IEC will be canceled and electronically transmitted to DGFT, customs, and regional authorities.
